The degree of Rishabh Pant’s ligament tear following his horrible automobile accident is unknown, but if BCCI sources are correct, he will miss the forthcoming four-Test series against Australia.

Pant’s absence from competitive cricket could be lengthy, and it would be premature to set a timetable at this time. As a result, one of the most difficult tasks for the new selection committee will be to select the two keeper-batters for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

When the Test series begins in Nagpur on February 9, the Indian Test wicketkeeper’s place is suddenly up for grabs, and it might be a three-horse fight between Pant’s current understudy Kona Bharat, India A’s second keeper Upendra Yadav, and white-ball specialist Ishan Kishan.

On Friday morning, the 25-year-old lost control of his Mercedes while travelling from Delhi to Rourkee and collided with a divider at Mohammadpur Jat in the Manglaur district. He was initially taken to a local hospital but is now being treated for multiple injuries at Max Dehradun.

While X-ray and CT scan results ruled out any fractural, brain, or spinal injuries, the multiple ligament tear in his knee and ankle will almost probably keep him out for a long time. Depending on the severity of the ligament tear, it could take anywhere from two to six months.

“He has extensive swelling so MRI of ankle and knee is yet to be conducted. Once he is fit enough to travel, he will come to Mumbai where he will be under the board’s empanelled doctor Dinshaw Pardiwala,” a BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

The new selecting committee will have three options. The two India A keepers, Bharat and Upendra, will almost certainly make the main squad, while a speedy left-hander like Kishan could also make the cut.

Sanju Samson and Kishan did not play in the Ranji Trophy for Kerala and Jharkhand, respectively.

Technically, Bharat, as the Test team’s second keeper, might make his debut in Nagpur, but Upendra is a far superior package. He is a solid keeper and hitter with a 45-plus average.

However, Pant possesses an X-factor that Bharat and Upendra, despite being good performers, do not.

Ishan or Sanju are better alternatives because they have already dealt with the pressures of international cricket, but both will now be kicking themselves for giving over the heavy gloves to Kumar Kushagra and Ponnan Rahul, respectively.
