Babar Azam, the captain and standout batsman for Pakistan, was named the ICC ODI Player of 2022 on Thursday.

In ODI cricket in 2022, he amassed 679 runs from nine games at an average of 84.87, including three hundreds.

Adam Zampa of Australia, Shai Hope of the West Indies, and Sikandar Raza of Zimbabwe were also contenders for the honour.

“If you thought the Pakistan skipper had an ODI year to remember in 2021, then what he produced in 2022 was even better as the ultra-consistent right-hander retained his lead as the No.1 ranked batter on the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings,” the ICC said in a news statement.

“It’s a title that Babar has firmly held since July 2021 and has no intention of relinquishing anytime soon.

“It may come as a surprise that Babar only played nine ODIs in 2022, but the 28-year-old made them count, smashing three centuries, five half-centuries, and only really failing with the bat on one occasion.

“And it wasn’t just from an individual level that Babar prospered, with the Pakistan captain also leading his team with grace and to just one loss during the year.

“On figures alone, it was clear that Babar was an easy pick to win the coveted ICC Men’s ODI Player of the Year award in 2022.”

Azam was already selected captain of the ICC ODI Team of the Year for 2022.

It should be mentioned that Azam captained the ICC ODI Team of the Year in 2021.

The winners of the ICC Awards are determined by the results of the ICC Voting Academy, which includes a broader range of worldwide cricket journalists and broadcasters, with cricket fans also voting via the ICC’s digital channels.

The awards were valid from January 1 to December 31, 2022.
