Cristiano Ronaldo, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, has joined the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s club, Al-Nassr, perhaps ending his career in Europe.

Ronaldo will reportedly make more than $200 million per year, making him the highest-paid athlete, but his departure to Al-Nassr means he has waved farewell to the Champions League, and as he stated yesterday in a press conference, his work in Europe is admirably done.

It is foolish to believe Ronaldo could not have played for a prominent European team, given his magnificent performances for club and country, as well as the fact that he was still playing an important role at the age of 37.

There will be no longer be any players competing in the Champions League or any other European League who have the same passion and drive to win and bring their team to glory.

This surprised his fans, who will miss seeing him in action, scoring a brace against big European teams. This could also spell the end of Messi and Ronaldo’s epic rivalry. Messi is now on a clear road to multiple European crowns, and he will compete for another Champions League trophy with PSG.

Ronaldo, who has surely won every prominent prize in Europe while playing in the top three leagues, is a five-time major champion of Europe, having won the first with Manchester United in 2008 and the other four with Real Madrid.

Ronaldo’s unblemished goal-scoring record at club and international levels defines the Portuguese prodigy.

However, his recent track record with the latter of his two clubs demonstrates how things ultimately went wrong for Ronaldo after leaving Real Madrid. Ronaldo, a stunner at the Santiago Bernabeu who witnessed several triumphant moments, left Madrid for Turin in 2018 after being lavishly decorated with trophies. If he had never left Real Madrid, he might have won another Champions League or, who knows, another Ballon d’Or.

Ronaldo has an incredible record in the top European leagues where he has played. With 819 goals in his career, Ronaldo is the all-time leading scorer in Champions League history, with 141 goals.

With no more Champions League play, his arch-rival Messi may appear to shatter this record, currently sitting in second place with 125 goals.

What is clearly upsetting is the manner in which Ronaldo had to finish his European career and leave Manchester United, a club near to his heart. Ronaldo’s return to United was disastrous.

Perhaps a swift exit from Italy and return to the Premier League loosened the last screw keeping his European action together. Despite not having to start every game under Ten Heg, Ronaldo was unhappy even during Ralf Ragnick’s brief stay at the club.

He had expressed his impending unhappiness with Ralf Ragnick. He claims both did a horrible job and emphasises that the club is not the same as it was the last time he was in the locker room. The connection with the new manager did not go well after the appointment of Erik Ten Hag, and neither could build good chemistry.

It all came down to an interview Ronaldo delivered in which he bemoaned his relationship with the club. Ronaldo had to leave Manchester United before the start of the World Cup and found himself in the middle of nowhere.

Ronaldo stated in the interview that a lot has changed since Sir Alex left, adding that United has had one of its driest seasons in terms of major trophies and dismal performances.

United hasn’t won the Champions League in 15 years, and Ronaldo was not even a part of that victory. But he was unable to repeat the feat with Juventus, as the club failed to win the Champions League.

Al-Nassr has discovered a highly decorated player who has won everything in Europe, but it’s possible that Ronaldo’s career will end like that of other European stars who moved to the MLS, Chinese league, or Japanese league. Ronaldo sees this as a new challenge, but the football fans are bewildered by the unexpected change of events that he experienced.
