Yann Sommer, a goalkeeper from Borussia Moenchengladbach, will take the place of injured Manuel Neuer, Bayern Munich confirmed on Thursday.

Compared to Neuer’s current contract, which expires in 2024, Sommer’s at Bayern will last until the summer of 2025.

Following a skiing accident in December that resulted in him breaking his leg, the 36-year-old Neuer was declared ineligible for the rest of the season.

Sommer expressed his excitement for the next challenge at FC Bayern.

“We face some significant obstacles ahead of us. I’m really anticipating everything that will happen, including starting here with my new teammates.

“I want to thank Borussia Moenchengladbach for eight and a half beautiful years and for allowing this transfer,” the 80-year-old Swiss international said.

Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic stated the club “had to react after losing Manuel”.

“We have enormous ambitions this season that we want to reach, and that’s why we’ve hired Yann Sommer, who we rate as one of the top European goalkeepers.

“With his ambition and character, (Sommer) fits in extremely well with our team.”

‘Gladbach would receive an eight-million-euro transfer fee plus 1.5 million in add-ons if Bayern won the Bundesliga, German Cup, and Champions League,’ according to the German tabloid Bild.

Sommer landed in Munich after hours on Wednesday and had a checkup on Thursday. Before the team’s formal announcement, he was later spotted training in team colours with Bayern among the rest of the squad.

After Neuer’s injury, Bayern made it known that they intended to sign Sommer after being dissatisfied with their inability to get Alexander Nuebel back from his loan at Ligue 1 club Monaco.

One of Europe’s top goalkeepers, Sommer has played 272 league games for Gladbach since coming from Swiss club Basel in 2014.

In his team’s 1-1 draw with Bayern in August of last year, he made a Bundesliga-high 19 stops.

As soon as Sommer left, Gladbach moved to cover it up by signing Jonas Omlin from Montpellier of Ligue 1.

Omlin, 29, has a contract until June 30, 2027.

“By signing Jonas Omlin, we believe we have found a very solid option. He is a dependable goalkeeper who exudes confidence, is strong on his line, and has good ball control “Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus made the announcement in a statement.

Sommer is expected to make his debut for Bayern on Friday when they go to third-place RB Leipzig, where they now sit four points ahead of the Bundesliga.
