Kylian Mbappe will miss the opening leg of Paris Saint-Champions Germain’s League last-16 encounter against Bayern Munich on February 14 due to a thigh injury, according to the club.
After saving two penalties earlier in the game, France’s star was injured during the first half of Wednesday’s 3-1 triumph at Montpellier in Ligue 1.
Tests have since proved the exact severity of the issue; initially, PSG coach Christophe Galtier had claimed Mbappe had had a hit to the back of the knee rather than a muscle injury.
“After testing, Kylian Mbappe received an injury to the left thigh at the level of the femoral biceps,” the club announced in a statement.
Mbappe faces a race against time to recover in time for a potentially crucial Ligue 1 game away to the same opponents at the end of this month if he misses the anticipated three weeks. He can also expect to miss next midweek’s French Cup last-16 match against Marseille.
Mbappe, who has 25 goals in 26 games for PSG this season, is expected to be healthy for the second leg against Bayern on March 8 in Germany.
The news is a devastating blow for the French powerhouses, who are desperately trying to prevent a repetition of last season when they were eliminated by Real Madrid in the round of 16 of the Champions League.
