Liverpool: Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, and Mohamed Salah all scored twice as Liverpool destroyed Manchester United 7-0 at Anfield on Sunday, overcoming a frustrating season.

The victory margin for Jurgen Klopp’s team over the two most successful clubs in English football was a new high.

Klopp said, “It was one of the best performances for a long, long time. Everybody saw what the boys can be,”

“The second half couldn’t start better. From that moment on we were flying and it was really difficult to play against us.”

United’s chances of winning the league for the first time in ten years are realistically over with just a second loss in 23 games in all competitions as they are still 14 points behind third-place Arsenal.

Yet, the club’s record-equaling defeat in a game of competition, which was the heaviest since 1931, could do much more long-lasting harm.

United manager Erik ten Hag said, “The result is quite obvious. It is unprofessional,”

“There are many things which make me angry. To concede so easily the goals is one.”

Liverpool has a game in hand over fourth-place Tottenham and is just three points behind them.

Last season, Klopp’s team defeated opposition in two league games by an overall score of 9-0, but this season, it seemed the tide had changed.

Erik ten Hag’s first victory as United manager came in an August 2-1 victory over the Reds, and his squad began the day 10 points ahead of Liverpool.

Liverpool has appeared to be a shell of the team that last season nearly won an unprecedented quadruple of titles.

Yet, despite being humiliated 5-2 by Real Madrid at home, they have gotten back into contention for a spot in the Champions League for the upcoming season thanks to a run of 13 points from a possible 15 in the Premier League.

Klopp added, “Everybody has to feel us. Everybody has to know we are still around,”

“That’s what we have to be from now on”

Ten Hag instructed his team to enjoy the hostile atmosphere at Anfield, where United has not triumphed since 2016.

But two minutes before halftime, Gakpo let loose the floodgates, and they gave way.

The Dutch international cut inside and blasted low into the far corner after Andy Robertson split up the United defence.

The second period saw Ten Hag’s troops completely destroyed as Liverpool’s revamped front three came together.

Nunez punished careless United defence by stooping to head in a cross from Harvey Elliott.

Following a quick Liverpool counterattack, Gakpo scored his second goal with a lovely dink over David de Gea.

Salah said, “It’s very special, I can’t lie,”

“This record was in my mind since I came here. After my first season, I was always chasing the record.”

This week, it was confirmed that Roberto Firmino would leave the team at the end of the current campaign.

The Brazilian, who had been on the bench, scored an incredible seventh goal with two minutes remaining to seal the victory.
