In the lead-up to the 37th match of the ICC World Cup 2023 between South Africa and India, South African cricket team captain Temba Bavuma has suggested that his team is considering a spin attack strategy to counter India. The pivotal encounter is scheduled to take place at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on November 5.

Bavuma, who is 33 years old, confirmed that the Proteas are contemplating the possibility of fielding two frontline spinners, Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi, a strategy that they previously employed against Pakistan in Chennai due to favorable spinning conditions. He mentioned, “If the wicket assists the spinners, you’ll definitely see those two.”

South Africa, known for its cricketing prowess, has often been tagged as “chokers” due to their inability to clinch the World Cup despite strong starts in the past. However, Bavuma brushed aside this label when questioned by a local journalist about whether the team had discussed how not to choke in such a crucial match.

“To choke? I don’t know how to answer that. I think if we come unstuck tomorrow, I don’t think it’ll be a matter of choking. I doubt you would say that about India as well if they come unstuck if they would choke,” he responded, emphasizing the quality of both teams.

Bavuma expressed his team’s readiness to face the challenges ahead, saying, “We’ll deal with them as best as we can. But yeah, I haven’t heard that word [chokers] come up as of yet in the training.”

The Proteas are aware of the pressure moments that come with a World Cup, and they aim to maintain a cohesive team spirit, manage their emotions, and perform at their best. Bavuma noted, “We understand that there will be pressure moments within the World Cup, some of those we’ve been able to overcome to get to this point, and there will still be more. I think we still want to stay a lot more drawn to each other as a team, regulate our emotions as much as we can and make sure we’re in the best space possible to play our best cricket.”

India has already secured a spot in the semi-finals of the World Cup, while South Africa, with 12 points, can also earn a semi-final berth by defeating the hosts in Kolkata on Sunday. The clash promises to be a battle of in-form teams, with both sides looking to exploit any moment of weakness to advance in the tournament. Cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the showdown between these two cricketing powerhouses in this high-stakes match.
