In a heated match between Argentina and Uruguay at La Bombonera, Buenos Aires, on Friday, November 16, Argentina emerged victorious with a 2-0 win. However, the post-match discussions were dominated by an incident involving Uruguay’s midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who made an inappropriate and obscene gesture towards Argentina’s Rodrigo De Paul.

The incident quickly went viral on social media, prompting Argentina’s captain, Lionel Messi, to address the issue in a post-match interview. Messi expressed his disapproval of such behavior, particularly from younger players, and urged them to show more respect towards their opponents.

“I prefer not to say what I think. Young people have to learn to respect their elders. These games are always intense but very respectful, so they have to learn a little,” Messi stated, emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship in high-stakes matches.

Despite the controversy, Messi took a moment to acknowledge Uruguay’s playing style, attributing it to the influence of Marcelo Bielsa. He commended the team’s physical and fast players, noting that Uruguay’s approach made it challenging for Argentina to execute their own game plan.

“You can see Bielsa’s hand on the way Uruguay is playing. In all the national teams or clubs, including Argentina, his style was very recognizable. And he has a good generation of players [in Uruguay],” Messi remarked.

Looking ahead, Messi praised Uruguay as an intense and physically demanding team. He admitted that Argentina struggled to find their rhythm in the match, falling prey to Uruguay’s swift style of play.

“They have physical and fast players in the midfield. We never felt comfortable, and we didn’t find a way to possess the ball for a long period of time. So the game was played at a fast pace, and we fell for that style, which isn’t the best for us,” Messi explained.

The victory against Uruguay sets the stage for Argentina’s upcoming clash with Brazil at the iconic Maracana in Rio de Janeiro on November 22, promising another thrilling encounter between two football powerhouses in South America.
