In a stunning finale to the ICC World Cup 2023 on Sunday in Ahmedabad, Australia secured their record-extending sixth 50-overs World Cup title, overshadowed by controversy surrounding the pitch. Legendary Australia captain Ricky Ponting criticized India’s pitch preparation, suggesting it backfired on them during the high-profile clash.

Ponting commented, “It was very, very sub-continental conditions today. A wicket preparation that has probably ended up backfiring on India, to be totally fair.” Despite India’s impressive run in the tournament, Australia emerged victorious, with opener Travis Head’s brilliant century playing a pivotal role in their six-wicket win.

India, asked to bat first, posted a below-par total of 240 all out in 50 overs, with KL Rahul and Virat Kohli contributing battling half-centuries. However, Australia’s bowlers, backed by exceptional fielding, stifled India’s efforts. The decision by Australian captain Pat Cummins to field, aimed at avoiding dew in the night, proved effective as India suffered their first loss of the tournament in the final.

In the chase, Australia faced a top-order wobble, reaching 47-3 in seven overs. However, Travis Head’s outstanding innings of 137 off 120 balls, along with Marnus Labuschagne’s unbeaten 58, formed a formidable 192-run partnership that secured Australia’s victory with seven overs to spare.

India’s captain Rohit Sharma set the tone with an entertaining 47, but his dismissal and the challenging pitch conditions made it difficult for the Indian batsmen. Virat Kohli’s 54 and KL Rahul’s 66 provided some resistance, but the lack of boundaries and the consistent pressure from the Australian bowlers led to India’s downfall.

Australia’s victory was further highlighted by wicketkeeper Josh Inglis, who took five catches, setting a record for the most catches in a World Cup final. The match, witnessed by around 93,000 predominantly Indian fans, concluded with Australia’s celebration and India’s first defeat in the tournament’s crucial summit clash. The controversy surrounding the pitch added an unexpected layer to what was already a historic World Cup final.
