South Africa defeated Afghanistan by 5 wickets in the 42nd match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday. Rassie van der Dussen played an unbeaten knock of 76 runs to guide South Africa to victory.

Afghanistan batted first and scored 244 runs in 50 overs. Azmatullah Omarzai top-scored for Afghanistan with 97 runs, while Noor Ahmed contributed 24 runs. Gerald Coetzee was the pick of the South African bowlers with 4 wickets for 44 runs.

South Africa started their chase brilliantly and scored 60 runs in the first 10 overs for no loss. However, they lost wickets at regular intervals after that. David Miller (24) and Aiden Markram (25) made useful contributions, but it was van der Dussen who held the innings together with his unbeaten knock.

Andile Phehlukwayo hit the winning shot for South Africa in the 49th over. He finished with 39 runs off 37 balls, including three sixes.

South Africa will now face Australia in the World Cup semi-final.
