Rovman Powell, the T20I captain of West Indies, has disclosed his efforts to persuade Sunil Narine to reconsider his retirement in time for this year’s T20 World Cup, which will be held in their home country.

Narine announced his retirement from international cricket in November 2023 and his last appearance for West Indies in a T20I was in August 2019.

“For the last 12 months, I’ve been whispering in his [Narine’] ears, but he’s blocked out everyone,” Powell was reported as saying by espncricinfo.

“I’ve asked [Kieron] Pollard, [Dwayne] Bravo, [Nicholas] Pooran. Hopefully, before they select the team, they can crack his code.”

This news follows Narine’s spectacular century that propelled Kolkata Knight Riders to a score of 223 for 6 on Tuesday.

“It is what it is, but let’s see what the future holds,” Narine remarked after the game, when questioned about his retirement decision.

Narine achieved his first T20 century during the IPL 2024 match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals at Eden Gardens on Tuesday.

Narine, who opened the batting for KKR, hit a century off 49 balls, including eleven fours and six sixes, surpassing his previous highest T20 score of 85.

In doing so, he became the first player in the IPL to both score a hundred and take a five-wicket haul.

Narine is only the third KKR batter, after Brendon Mccullum and Venkatesh Iyer, to score a hundred. The left-handed batsman has so far scored 1313 runs in his career at a strike rate of 165.16, with one hundred and five half-centuries.

The 35-year-old offspinner has also taken 168 wickets for KKR in 168 matches, with an economy rate of 6.73 and an average of 25.82.

In his T20I career, Narine has only managed to score 155 runs in 51 matches, averaging 10.33.
