Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest mobile network operator, sustained a massive cyber attack on Tuesday, disrupting mobile and internet services for millions of subscribers. This assault, believed to be the largest of the war with Russia, has sent shockwaves through the cybersecurity community and raised concerns about the escalating digital warfare tactics employed in the conflict.

Kyivstar, with over 24.3 million mobile subscribers (more than half of Ukraine’s population) and 1.1 million home internet subscribers, faced significant infrastructure damage due to the attack. CEO Oleksandr Komarov attributed the incident to “war in cyber-space”, implying Russian responsibility without directly naming them. He further confirmed that the company’s IT infrastructure had been “partially destroyed”, forcing a physical shutdown to prevent further damage and limit enemy access.

The attack also compromised two databases containing customer data, highlighting the potential for privacy risks and identity theft. Currently, the databases are locked and under investigation.

While the full scope of the attack and the responsible parties remain unclear, the SBU intelligence agency has identified a cyber-attack by Russian security services as a possibility. Komarov expressed uncertainty regarding restoration of service, stating that the damage was extensive and required intensive repair efforts.

Veon, the Amsterdam-listed mobile telecoms operator that owns Kyivstar, issued a statement acknowledging the attack and their cooperation with law enforcement agencies. Veon is also conducting an internal investigation to determine the financial impact of the attack.

This incident underscores the growing threat of cyber warfare and its devastating impact on critical infrastructure and civilian lives. It serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust cybersecurity measures and international collaboration to combat these increasingly sophisticated attacks.
