Spotify has discreetly introduced a groundbreaking AI-powered playlist creation feature, currently undergoing testing.

A user, @robdad_, recently discovered and showcased the capability in a TikTok video, revealing a new dimension to the streaming giant’s commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence.

Accessible through the ‘Your Library’ tab, the AI playlists feature emerges as a novel option in the app’s interface. The description prompts users to “Turn your ideas into playlists using AI.”

Currently available only in English, the feature presents a chatbot-style box where users can input their prompts or explore a list of suggested ones. The showcased video displayed intriguing prompt ideas like “get focused at work with instrumental electronica” or “explore a niche genre like Witch House.”

A report indicates that Spotify CEO Daniel Ek had hinted at the potential applications of AI within the platform, including the use of generative AI for summarizing podcasts and auto-generating audio ads. Ek envisions AI playing a significant role in music creation, with artists utilizing AI tools in the songwriting process. The incorporation of AI into playlist creation aligns with Spotify’s broader strategy of infusing artificial intelligence into various aspects of its platform.

Simultaneously, Spotify is navigating internal changes, marked by the departure of Chief Financial Officer Paul Vogel, following significant layoffs. CEO Daniel Ek cited Vogel’s lack of “requisite experience” to drive the company’s expansion and meet market expectations. Vogel, who joined Spotify in 2020, is set to leave the company in March 2024, coinciding with Spotify’s shift towards prioritizing margin over growth. As Vogel exits, Ben Kung, Vice President of Financial Planning and Analysis, is set to take on expanded responsibilities to support the company’s realignment of its financial leadership team.

With this latest AI-driven feature, Spotify aims to enhance user engagement and maintain its position as a trailblazer in the competitive streaming landscape. The undisclosed launch timeframe leaves users eagerly anticipating the full rollout of this innovative playlist creation tool.
