Apple Drops Plans to Develop MicroLED Displays for Apple Watch

Apple has decided to halt its plans to create a MicroLED display specifically for Apple Watches due to concerns about costs and technical challenges. This decision aligns with Apple’s earlier move to stop working on self-driving cars.

The report echoes predictions made by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who mentioned that the high production costs made the project economically impractical. As a result, Apple had to reduce its engineering team by several employees, including those working at its screen manufacturing facility in California.

The idea of Apple developing MicroLED displays for its smartwatches emerged from industry rumors last year. It was expected that these advanced displays would be part of future Apple Watch models, possibly around 2024-2025. This move aimed to give Apple more control over its display technology, reducing its reliance on external suppliers like Samsung and LG.

Currently, Apple’s Apple Watch models use OLED displays, which are known for their vivid colors and sharp visuals. While OLED technology is popular, the specific advantages of MicroLED displays over OLED are not entirely clear. Despite postponing plans for a MicroLED Apple Watch, Apple is still interested in MicroLED technology.

According to Bloomberg’s report, Apple is continuing to search for alternative suppliers and develop new manufacturing methods to incorporate MicroLED technology into its upcoming devices. This shows Apple’s ongoing dedication to advancing display technology.
