Netflix has quietly removed the ability to cast shows from smartphones to many newer TVs and streaming devices — and viewers are not happy about it.

The change, which took effect in November, mainly affects the latest Chromecast models and Google TV devices.

Netflix removes casting support on newer devices:

According to Netflix’s updated support page, users can no longer cast videos from their phones to most TVs. Instead, they must use the remote that comes with their smart TV or streaming device to control Netflix directly.

The update first came to light on Reddit, where confused users discussed the missing feature. Android Authority later confirmed that Netflix had officially made the change.

Some subscribers said customer support told them the move was meant to “improve customer experience,” with one agent saying:

“If the device has its own remote, you can’t cast.”

The change shows Netflix wants people to use the built-in app rather than control the service from their phones.

Which devices are affected?

Anyone using new Chromecast devices or the latest Google TV streamers will no longer see the casting option. If your Netflix app updated recently, the feature is likely gone.

However, casting still works on older devices like the original Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra, which depend on phones because they can’t run Netflix apps by themselves.

Plan-based restrictions continue:

Even for users with older Chromecast models, casting won’t work if they are on Netflix’s ad-supported plan — a rule introduced earlier in 2025.

Netflix has shared troubleshooting tips for those older devices, suggesting it will keep them supported. But those with newer hardware must now rely on remote navigation — whether they like it or not.
