WhatsApp to end support for old android phones on January 1, 2025

Meta has announced that WhatsApp will no longer support older Android phones running on Android KitKat or earlier versions starting January 1, 2025. This move affects devices that are over a decade old.

The decision stems from WhatsApp's need to integrate advanced features and AI functionalities that require modern hardware. As a result, several phones will lose access to the app, including:

• Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
• Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
• HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
• LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
• Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

If you're still using one of these devices, it’s essential to back up your WhatsApp data to a newer phone before the deadline. Otherwise, you risk losing your chat history and media permanently.

Meta has made similar announcements for iPhones, with WhatsApp support ending for devices running iOS versions older than 15.1. However, iPhone users have until May 2025 to switch to a compatible device.

This change highlights the growing need for up-to-date hardware to accommodate the evolving demands of modern apps like WhatsApp. Users are encouraged to upgrade their devices to ensure uninterrupted access.
