The Russians are attempting to subdue a second frontline town in eastern Ukraine, similar to Bakhmut, but locals believe Avdiivka will resist their pressure for a while.

Avdiivka, which has recently been subjected to airstrikes after being pounded by artillery, is another flashpoint in the Donbas that Moscow’s forces are attempting to surround, similar to Bakhmut, 60 kilometers (40 miles) to the north.

“Every day is the same with these bombs and missiles,” said 70-year-old Nadezhda.

She and a neighbor were carrying bags of food aid as they made their way home, passing by a 15-story residential tower that had been damaged the day before during an attack.

“When I saw it, I was just staggered,” said Nadezhda.

Since combat broke out between Kyiv’s forces and separatists backed by the Kremlin in 2014, the Russian army has been attempting to take over Avdiivka.

The village is only eight miles or 13 kilometers from Donetsk, the region’s name-bearing capital that is under Russian control.

The town had 30,000 residents before the invasion in February 2022.

About 2,300 people remain after more than a year of combat, with 1,960 of them dependent on charity, according to Vitaliy Barabash, head of the local military administration.

“Over the last three weeks, with the help of the police and volunteers, we have evacuated about 150 people.

“We had 47 children in the town, today only eight remain,” he told AFP.
