New York City’s newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani met U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, where both leaders described their discussions as constructive and focused on shared priorities.
President Trump congratulated Mamdani on his election victory, expressing confidence in the incoming mayor’s performance. “I congratulate Zohran Mamdani on being elected as Mayor,” Trump said, adding, “I am confident that the performance of New York’s Mayor will be good.”
Trump said the meeting centered on “matters of mutual interest,” noting that the two discussed New York’s challenges, inflation, and public safety. “We both want to eliminate crime in New York,” the President stated. He also remarked that his opinion of Mamdani had changed after the meeting, saying, “Things keep changing with time.”
Mamdani described the meeting as productive and forward-looking. “I thank the U.S. President; it was a positive meeting,” he said. “We discussed New York’s problems with President Trump… We also talked about reducing inflation in New York.” He emphasized that the focus was not on differences but on “how to improve the lives of New York’s citizens.”
The Mayor-elect said his administration would cooperate closely with the White House. “We will work together with President Trump for the development of New York,” Mamdani stated, adding that joint efforts would be made to combat crime in the city.
President Trump made several broader remarks during the meeting, noting that his administration had “brokered eight peace deals,” including one between India and Pakistan, and claiming that “the Ukrainian president will have to accept our peace plan.” He also stated that his own voters had supported Mamdani in the mayoral election and suggested that Mamdani “will surprise some conservative people.”
Toward the end of the meeting, Trump offered an unusual endorsement of New York City’s future under Mamdani’s leadership: “After the meeting, I would now prefer to live in New York.”
The White House described the interaction as cordial, with both leaders expressing readiness to work together in the coming term.
