Police in California reacted to complaints of an injured “otter” and discovered it was actually a fur seal pup that had “flapped” across a road.

Officers went to a complaint of an otter observed at an intersection and discovered the animal was a newborn fur seal called Ivy, according to the San Rafael Police Department.

According to the department in a Facebook post, “‘Ivy’ was located after she flapped across the roadway narrowly avoiding being hit by several cars.”

Northern fur seals are often located 600 miles off the coast and spend their whole lives at sea, according to the agency.

The Marine Mammal Center was notified, and volunteers were dispatched to the area to save the seal.
