According to reports, Vladimir Putin’s regime is “under serious threat for the first time ever” since he took power.

Professor Mark Galeotti, an honorary professor at the University College London School of Slavonic and East European Studies, believes the Ukrainian conflict has “turned into a disaster” and that “everyone is looking for other people to blame.”

Add to that Putin’s desire to implement a regime change for Ukrainians and his mistaken belief that Russian invaders would be greeted by flag-waving crowds bearing flower bouquets.

Mark Galeotti believes that anyone in Russia who knows anything can be labelled a warmonger or a traitor in Putin’s eyes, as he stated: “Anyone can be labelled a warmonger, a traitor, or both.

“Putin is enraged because many young soldiers in the National Guard, a paramilitary force whose peacetime role is to quell protests in Russian cities, are also protesting.

“They believe they are being treated as cannon fodder in Ukraine.”

We Need To Talk About Putin author Mark Galeotti believes Russian citizens believe what they see on state television, with many still believing the military operation is successful.

He said: “Most ordinary people in Russia believe the state TV version, that a successful military operation is underway to oust a neo-Nazi cabal in Kyiv and prevent ethnic cleansing or even nuclear genocide against Russians in Ukraine.

“When that lie is revealed, the public may begin to turn against the man at the top. Putin’s fate will be determined by how his cronies react to this.”

And, as sanctions hit Putin’s henchmen, he believes they are becoming concerned that they will be unable to make large sums of money in order to buy expensive properties in London or send their children to the best private Western schools.

He stated: “They, like the rest of Putin’s henchmen, are motivated by greed and seek personal power.

“They want to make a lot of money and spend it on real estate in London and the Mediterranean, or on sending their children to Western schools.

“Sanctions currently make this extremely difficult. As a result, they are concerned – no one in the FSB wants Russia to become Europe’s equivalent of North Korea.”

Putin has been assassinating key figures in the secret police, the FSB, and politicians in order to maintain his grip on power as the war continues, but rumours continue to circulate, with everyone blaming each other.

“Never since the collapse of the Soviet Union has there been such fervent rumour and counter-rumour in the Kremlin,” Mr Galeotti said. A firing squad is forming in a circle, with everyone pointing their guns at each other.

“And when conscripts begin to return from the Ukraine front, bringing horror stories of the war with them, the political temperature will only rise.”

“I don’t believe an FSB coup is in the works, at least not yet. Russians are well-versed in their own history, and they understand that regime change can only occur when the secret police, military, and politicians all work together, as they did in 1991 when President Mikhail Gorbachev was deposed.”
