Legal Fights for Imran

The PML-N govt is trying every tactic to put Imran Khan behind bars and finish his political career

ISLAMABAD: Despite focusing on the country’s economic issues, the PML-N government’s concentration is on the apprehension of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan by hook or by crook. The official machinery is busy sending legal notices to Khan.

A few days earlier, after getting interim protective bail from Lahore High Court, Imran Khan received another summons from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), in which he had to appear along with his wife Bushra Bibi on March 9 in Toshakhana. The PML-N government has started legal proceedings against the PTI Chairman Imran Khan to end his political career, whereas Khan is becoming more popular not only on a national level but on an international level as well.

The government has seen the public’s support for Imran Khan when he appeared in Lahore High Court to get protective bail. Now, after this episode, it has become more difficult for the ruling party to arrest the PTI chief in cases against him.

All of the government machinery is busy looking for corruption evidence against Imran Khan during his tenure as Prime Minister, but nothing solid has been found. That is why his name is being used in various cases to drag him into a legal battle and defame him in the public eye.

For this purpose, the PDM is actively using social media, where fake news is floating against former prime minister Imran Khan for his alleged corruption, whereas they have nothing to prove in court.

Cases against Imran

An FIR was launched against PTI chairman Imran Khan under section 7 of the ATA (Anti-Terrorism Act) for “threatening” a female judge and senior police officers in a public rally that drew a strong reaction from the federal government.

After that, a statement came from the United Nations chief saying that we are aware of the recent terrorism charges against PTI chief Imran Khan and have called for an “impartial legal process.”

The government has booked PTI chairman Imran Khan under 7 ATA Section 6(m): “Involves serious coercion (including acts of threat, abuse, or humiliation in order to frighten, harm, or punish) or intimidation of a public servant in order to force him to discharge or refrain from discharging his lawful duties;”

The FIR was registered on the complaint of Magistrate Ali Javed in Islamabad’s Margalla Police Station under Section 7 of the ATA. The FIR states that the PTI chairman threatened Additional Sessions Judge Zeba Chaudhry and police officers at a rally in F-9 Park to “terrorise” police officials and the judiciary. The main aim of the intimidation was to prevent the police officers and judiciary from carrying out their legal obligations.

The IHC contempt case

The IHC took the suo moto notice and initiated contempt proceedings against Imran Khan for the rally held in solidarity with his close aide Shahbaz Gill in the federal capital, as it had warned while naming Islamabad’s additional session’s judge for granting physical remand to Gill on the police request. Two other contempt proceedings against Imran Khan are the Speaker NA reference in the Toshakhana case and the misdeclaration in the PTI’s foreign funding case.

ECP Contempt case

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had also issued contempt notices to the PTI’s top leadership, including Imran Khan, Fawad Chaudhry, and Asad Umar, for levelling allegations against the electoral body and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja.

ECP has sought a response from PTI’s chairman for using “insulting and unparliamentary remarks” against the electoral body in various speeches until August 31.
