Mohammad Yousuf, Pakistan’s batting coach, bemoaned the inexperience of the national team’s bowlers during the second Test against New Zealand on Tuesday at the National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi.

On day two of the second Test against New Zealand, Pakistan has scored 154-3 at stumps.

At the finish of play, Imam-ul-Haq was unbeaten on 74 runs, with Saud Shakeel not out on 13.

After dismissing New Zealand for 449 runs in their first innings, the host team is still trailing by 295 runs.

After the finish of play, on being questioned if the pitch will degrade further during the national side’s second innings, batting coach Yousuf said: “Day by day when there the pitch gets badly rolled, the ball doesn’t bounce, and there is no turn. We cannot be certain how the pitch will behave in the coming days. Previously, when Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram were playing, the ball carried and bounced a little. We have a youthful bowling attack, and in Test cricket, bowling experience is essential, as is the ability to bowl at the appropriate position and length.”

“We don’t have experienced bowlers, especially in this series. Haris Rauf and Mohammad Ali made their debut, while Mir Hamza was playing his second Test. All these players are young,”

he added.

The former hitter also backed Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood, both of whom have struggled for the hosts.

“Abdullah Shafique scored a century during the first Test against England and since then he has been a little bit struggling. It’s hard to tweak the technicality but tunning can be done. We have also gone through this period it’s hard to make changes to it as it further makes it difficult.

“Both are playing their natural game. We all support our players to play their natural game and they are trying to.”

In the day two post-lunch session, New Zealand was expelled for 449.

Matt Henry (68 not out) and Ajaz Patel (35) scored 104 runs for the last wicket to frustrate Pakistan’s bowlers.

“It gets teasing when the tailenders get run toward the ends. They played good shots and got lucky too so they scored 100 extra runs,” he said.
