Erik ten Hag, the head coach of Manchester United, bestowed praise on Harry Maguire and Andre Onana following his team’s 1-0 victory at Old Trafford in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) 2023–24 on Tuesday.

After losing to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray back-to-back, this was United’s first UCL victory of the season.

Maguire gave his team the lead in the 72nd minute with a goal, but all of it could have been lost if Onana hadn’t saved a penalty against Jordan Larsson in the 97th minute.

Like everyone else, Ten Hag was unable to contain his praise for United’s two heroes of the evening.

“He’s playing much more proactively in possession, stepping in, passing vertically,” Ten Hag said on Maguire. “He’s defending on the front foot, defending forward, very confident in the duels, I think he is dominating in the right way with his aggression against opponents. You see he also gets rewarded. Of course, his heading is a skill… a very good finish.”

The Dutch football manager continued by praising Onana for his injury-time penalty save.

“[Onana] showed personality,” said Ten Hag. “He knows his levels didn’t match his skills before. He could do better. [He had] a very good performance on Saturday. Today, as well. Also, don’t forget that brilliant save just after half-time in the counter-attack. Of course, one of his skills is he’s a very good penalty-saver.”

It should be mentioned that United is now in third place in UCL Group A with just three points out of a possible nine. In order to advance to the Round of 16, they would need to win their remaining games, which appears impossible given their current performance.

United will be relegated to the UEFA Europa League, a competition they participated in last season if they end up third in the group standings after six games.

On October 29, Ten Hag’s team will play at home against Manchester City, their current European champions and city rivals.
