Former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Amir has suggested a change in the opening combination for Pakistan’s T20 side, emphasizing the importance of impactful players during the powerplay overs.

Speaking on a show, Amir expressed his preference for Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub as openers, excluding the current pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. He stressed the significance of a strong start in T20 matches, particularly in the crucial first six overs of both batting and bowling.

“In T20, six overs of batting and six overs of bowling are extremely important. You need impact in the powerplay from the beginning. Saim and Fakhar are impactful players,” Amir asserted.

Contrary to Amir’s viewpoint, all-rounder Imad Wasim acknowledged Babar Azam’s earlier T20 century but suggested a shift in batting order, noting the dynamic nature of T20 cricket. Wasim proposed that the captain, Babar Azam, should come down the order where his presence is most needed.

“One has to compete with the world since T20 cricket changes month by month. We never said to remove Babar completely; we only suggested to come down the order. Where the team needs a captain the most, the captain must bat there. He plays spinners and pacers well,” Wasim added.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan currently hold the record for the best opening pair in T20 history, with 2708 runs collectively scored in 56 innings. Their partnership includes nine century stands and eleven fifty-run collaborations.

The proposed reshuffle in the opening combination has sparked discussions among cricket enthusiasts, with opinions divided on whether the established pair should be replaced in the upcoming T20 fixtures.
