In a thrilling finale at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Australia emerged victorious in the ICC World Cup 2023, defeating India. The star of the night was Travis Head, who played a pivotal role in the triumph by scoring an impressive 137 runs. Despite losing three early wickets, the left-handed batter stood tall and guided his team to victory.

After the match, an ecstatic Head expressed his joy at being part of the World Cup-winning team, stating, “What an amazing day! Just thrilled to be a part of it. It’s a lot better than seeing the World Cup on the couch at home (on his injury).”

Head gave credit to his teammate Marnus Labuschagne for providing stability in the batting lineup after the early setbacks. “I was a little bit nervous, but Marnus played exceptionally well and soaked all the pressure. I felt the way Mitch [Marsh] took the game on set the tone, and that was the energy we wanted,” Head said.

Reflecting on the decision to bowl first, Head mentioned that it paid dividends as the wicket improved as the game progressed. He emphasized the importance of contributing to the team and expressed his satisfaction at holding on in front of a full house.

With his century in the final against India, Travis Head achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first batter to score a hundred in a World Cup summit clash since Mahela Jayawardene in 2011. Head is also the third Australian to secure a World Cup final century, following Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist, and only the second, after Aravinda de Silva of Sri Lanka, to do so in a run-chase.

The full list of centuries in World Cup finals now includes Travis Head’s remarkable innings alongside cricket legends like Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards, Aravinda de Silva, Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, and Mahela Jayawardene.
