Twitter has suspended numerous fake accounts reportedly owned by black supporters of US President Donald Trump.
The tech giant has not revealed the exact number of accounts suspended so far or the source of them. However, it said that the accounts have broken its spam and platform manipulation.
Many of the accounts used similar language, including the phrase: “YES IM BLACK AND IM VOTING FOR TRUMP!!!”
The social media platform said that it was continuing to probe the activity. It also said that additional accounts may also be suspended if they are found to be breaking the policies.
Darren Linvill, a social media disinformation researcher at Clemson University, discovered more than 20 such accounts, which have posted nearly 265,000 retweets or Twitter mentions.
According to BBC, some of the suspended accounts used photos of a black man that appeared in news articles. Many accounts had thousands of followers.
Mr. Linvill told Reuters news agency that most of the accounts were created in 2017, but had become more active in the past two months.
He said all of the accounts he had been monitoring had now been suspended but that they had “already had their impact”.
Twitter forbids using the platform “to artificially amplify or suppress information or engage in behavior that manipulates or disrupts people’s experience” on the site.
