Covid outbreak hits Sri Lanka on eve of Australia Test
Sri Lanka's players tested positive for Covid-19 on eve of the second...
The debuting spinner Prabath Jayasuriya took six wickets as Sri Lanka knocked out Australia for 364 on the second day of the second Test in Galle on Saturday, leaving Steve Smith unbroken on 145.
Smith and Alex Carey increased their sixth-wicket partnership to 77 runs until Jayasuriya broke through with the score at 329.
Jayasuriya, who took three wickets on the first day, set a trap for Carey, who was caught at backward point for 28 after miscuing a reverse sweep.
Soon after Mitchell Starc was out for one, the left-arm spinner became the seventh Sri Lankan bowler to take five wickets in his Test debut.
As Smith ran out of partners, fast bowler Kasun Rajitha and “mystery” spinner Maheesh Theekshana also struck.
Jayasuriya, along with Theekshana and Kamindu Mendis, was one of the three Sri Lankan players to receive his first Test cap when a Covid outbreak sidelined numerous members of the squad.
Smith and Marnus Labuschagne spearheaded Australia’s first-day dominance with a third-wicket stand of 134 during which they attacked the opposing bowlers.
Labuschagne scored 104 before being caught by Jayasuriya for his first international century.
Smith overcame his 18-month century drought with his 28th Test century, finishing the first day on 109.
Outside the stadium, hundreds of demonstrators demanded the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa during the second day of play in the port city.
Sri Lanka is experiencing its worst economic crisis ever, and a large portion of the population has accused Rajapaksa’s administration of chronic mismanagement.
Australia leads the two-match series 1-0 after a thumping three-day victory in the opening Test last week.
