GWADAR: The New Gwadar International Airport officially became operational as its first commercial flight landed successfully on Monday.

PIA flight PK-503, which departed from Karachi at 9:50 AM with 46 passengers on board, touched down at the new airport at 11:15 AM local time. The arrival of the flight marked the beginning of operations at this state-of-the-art facility.

The landing was celebrated with a water cannon salute. Present to welcome the historic flight were Defence and Aviation Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, and other dignitaries.

According to a PIA spokesperson, this moment symbolizes pride for Gwadar and the entire nation, paving the way for economic development, tourism, and enhanced international connectivity.

The New Gwadar International Airport is a key project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It was constructed with the collaboration of China and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), highlighting its significance in regional and global integration.

Earlier in February 2024, the airport temporarily suspended flight operations due to 16 hours of heavy rainfall. The Civil Aviation Authority prioritized passenger and aircraft safety, halting operations during the downpour.

The opening of this advanced airport heralds a new era in air travel, offering significant opportunities for Gwadar and Pakistan’s connectivity with the world.
