Shanghai: Imagine being paralyzed for eight years, unable to move, communicate freely, or touch the world around you and then, in just five days, regaining control of digital devices using only your thoughts.
This is no sci-fi fantasy. For a 28-year-old man in China, it has become reality.
The groundbreaking feat was achieved through the world’s first clinical trial of a fully implanted, fully wireless Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), developed by Shanghai NeuroXess.
This revolutionary system connects the patient’s nervous system directly to external machines, allowing him to act entirely through thought.
The implant itself is extraordinarily precise: 64 electrodes, each merely one percent the width of a human hair, are embedded in the brain, while the processor, antenna, and battery are placed beneath the chest skin.
Its built-in battery and wireless charging dock enable continuous, independent operation a technological leap that experts believe could redefine human-machine interaction.
"The built-in battery is a revolutionary step," said Zhang Xu from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. "Achieving long-term usability and sustained power is crucial for real-world applications of this technology."
The results have been astonishing. Within five days, the patient could perform basic functions; just six weeks later, he was able to browse the internet, play video games, operate smart home devices, and even maneuver his wheelchair all using the power of his mind.
Professor Mao Ying of Huashan Hospital confirmed the success: “He can now control household appliances and navigate his wheelchair independently. This is a monumental breakthrough for people living with paralysis.”
The achievement inevitably draws comparisons with Elon Musk’s Neuralink, where paralysed patient Rocky Stoutenburgh demonstrated moving a robotic arm to his face. Neuralink has already attracted more than 10,000 sign-ups for upcoming trials, reflecting global excitement for mind-controlled technology.
