Makkah: Tonight, Saturday, 28 February 2026, the Ramadan moon will create a breathtaking astronomical moment as it aligns directly above the Kaaba in Makkah.
According to the Jeddah Astronomical Society, the moon will cross the local meridian at 10:24:40 PM Saudi Standard Time, reaching roughly 90 degrees above the horizon positioned perfectly over the Masjid al-Haram.
Engineer Majed Abu Zahrah explained that this rare alignment, known as “lunar culmination,” happens when the moon’s tilt matches the latitude of a specific location.
The result from anywhere in the world, observing the moon’s position can help Muslims accurately determine the direction of the Qibla.
At the moment of culmination, the moon will be nearly full, 91% illuminated, and about 374,000 kilometers from Earth. Clear skies will allow it to be visible with the naked eye, while binoculars or telescopes will reveal even finer details.
Astronomers say this event uniquely blends science and spirituality, giving observers a chance to witness a cosmic alignment that’s as visually stunning as it is meaningful. For Muslims worldwide, tonight’s moon isn’t just a celestial spectacle it’s also a guide for prayer.
