Ryan Hurst has been cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular video game franchise God of War.
The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in collaboration with PlayStation Productions.
The show, inspired by the PlayStation games steeped in ancient mythology, has been ordered for two seasons, with pre-production currently underway in Vancouver.
God of War is written, showrun, and executive produced by Ronald D. Moore, known for his work on Outlander and For All Mankind.
The narrative follows Kratos and his son Atreus on a journey to scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother. Throughout their travels, Kratos strives to teach his son how to be a better god, while Atreus helps his father rediscover his humanity.
Kratos, a Spartan by birth and a god by nature, was raised in a militaristic culture and rose to command armies before forging a pact with Ares, the Greek God of War, gaining victory at the cost of his soul. Across ten games, he has battled mortals, monsters, and gods, becoming a beloved character known for his stoicism, combat prowess, and tragic past.
The series will closely follow the storyline of the two most recent games, highlighting the evolving father-son relationship between Kratos and Atreus, which is expected to serve as the emotional heart of the show.
Hurst, who previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök—a performance that earned him a BAFTA nomination—brings extensive television experience, including roles in Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead, Bosch, and Bates Motel. He is also set to appear in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, releasing on July 17.
Executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, and Asad Qizilbash, among others, with Frederick E.O. Toye attached to direct the first two episodes.
