Apple is now set to revolutionise smartwatches with its upcoming Apple Watch Ultra 3. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the Ultra 3 will feature satellite messaging, allowing users to send texts even without cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity by using satellites.

Another possible innovation is blood pressure monitoring. Although this feature has faced delays, it could finally debut in the Ultra 3.

However, it won’t provide precise readings; instead, it will alert users to potential hypertension. A non-invasive blood glucose tracker is also being developed but isn’t expected to arrive next year.

Apple first introduced satellite communication with the iPhone 14 in 2022. Initially, it supported emergency services and roadside assistance. In 2023, the capability expanded to texting via iMessage.

So far, an iPhone has been required for these features, but the Apple Watch Ultra 3 could change that, enabling users to stay connected without carrying their phones.

These upgrades are part of Apple’s strategy to boost smartwatch sales, which have slowed recently. Revenue from the division that includes Apple Watches has declined over the past two years, likely due to fewer compelling reasons to upgrade. Apple is betting that satellite messaging and health-tracking features will reignite interest.

In addition to these enhancements, some Apple Watch models 2024 will incorporate MediaTek modems instead of Intel’s. This marks Apple’s first significant partnership with MediaTek. The new modems will support 5G RedCap, a specialized 5G service designed for wearables and other low-data devices.

With these innovations, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 aims to redefine the smartwatch experience and address consumers’ growing demand for connectivity and health monitoring.

Whether it’s satellite texting or advanced health insights, Apple is striving to keep its smartwatch lineup ahead of the curve.
