US Vice President JD Vance has described the ongoing US–Iran diplomatic engagement in Burgenstock, Switzerland, as a “historic breakthrough,” highlighting it as a rare and significant step toward reshaping regional stability through dialogue.
Addressing the Lake Lucerne Summit, Vance credited Pakistan’s leadership, particularly Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, for playing a pivotal role in facilitating the high-level negotiations and enabling both sides to come to the table.
He emphasized that the United States would not have reached this stage without Pakistan’s strategic diplomatic facilitation, underscoring Islamabad’s growing relevance as a key intermediary in regional peace efforts.
Praising Field Marshal Asim Munir, Vance described him as a “distinguished military strategist and statesman”, noting that he has remained one of Washington’s most frequently engaged counterparts over recent months.
He further acknowledged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commending his “measured, skillful, and carefully executed diplomacy” which according to him helped advance the negotiation process in a meaningful way.

The US Vice President also recognized Qatar’s constructive diplomatic involvement, calling it an essential partner in facilitating dialogue and supporting de-escalation efforts across the region.
Outlining Washington’s broader vision, Vance stated that the objective of the talks is to redefine regional dynamics through sustained diplomacy, fostering a future rooted in peace, cooperation, and economic stability.
He noted that the current engagement represents one of the most significant diplomatic openings in recent years, marking the first substantial high-level interaction between Iranian and American representatives in a long time.
Vance added that early discussions had produced encouraging momentum, with expectations of further progress in the coming phases.
Commenting on wider regional tensions, particularly in Lebanon, he reiterated the US commitment to de-escalation and conflict containment, stressing continued diplomatic engagement despite ongoing challenges.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, speaking at the summit, termed the negotiations a landmark development for global peace and stability, expressing optimism that the process could evolve into a durable diplomatic framework.
He extended appreciation to US President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Qatar’s leadership for their collective efforts in enabling the dialogue.
Sharif praised Iran’s leadership for showing restraint and a constructive approach toward de-escalation, reaffirming Pakistan’s consistent stance in favor of dialogue, peace, and regional harmony.
He further emphasized that strengthened Pakistan–US relations and enhanced regional cooperation could pave the way for greater economic integration, improved security coordination, and long-term stability.
Qatar’s Prime Minister also described the development as “historically significant,” noting its potential impact on both regional security architecture and the broader global economic outlook.
