OSLO: Norway’s royal palace announced Wednesday that Crown Princess Mette-Marit has undergone a successful lung transplant as she continues treatment for a chronic lung disease that has affected her health for several years.
The 52-year-old wife of Crown Prince Haakon was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018 and has since faced recurring health challenges linked to the progressive condition.
In a statement, the Norwegian Palace said Crown Princess Mette-Marit underwent the transplant procedure at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet in Oslo and that the operation was successful.
“Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit has undergone a successful lung transplant at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet in Oslo,” the palace said, adding that medical staff are satisfied with the outcome of the surgery so far.
The palace said the crown princess is expected to remain hospitalized for several weeks as she recovers from the procedure.
“The Crown Prince and the Crown Princess express their sincere gratitude for the many warm and kind messages they have received. This means a great deal to them at this challenging time,” the statement said.
Mette-Marit, a prominent member of the Norwegian royal family, has remained active in public life despite her diagnosis, although her official engagements have occasionally been adjusted because of her health condition.

Earlier, Kensington Palace has confirmed that Prince George, the eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales, will attend Eton College from September, ending years of speculation over his education.
The decision means Prince George will follow in the footsteps of his father, Prince William, and his uncle, Prince Harry, both of whom studied at the prestigious boarding school.
