Should media outlets be promoting terrorism?

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) fined Samaa and Waqt TV channels Rs. 1 million each for airing an interview of  Malik Mumtaz Qadri, the killer of former Punjab Governor, Salman Taseer.

Several TV channels had recorded the interview of Qadri, the self-confessed assassin of the late Governor Punjab. While others exhibited “responsibility”, only the said TV channel aired the interview. According to the press release, PEMRA took immediate cognizance of the violations committed by these two satellite TV channels while covering the unfortunate incident that took place on January 4, 2011.

PEMRA had issued notices to these two news channels on January 5, 2011 for projecting terrorists/outlaw, screening blood and gore which by all means is in contravention to PEMRA’s rules, regulations and the code of conduct. Under PEMRA’s laws both these channels were provided reasonable opportunity to show cause and explain their position in personal hearings held on January 6 and 10, 2011.

Meanwhile, PEMRA issued new directives to all TV channels regarding analyses, views and discussion on sub-judice matters after such irresponsibility shown by two media outlets in the country. Both the channels have faced backlash for doing irresponsible journalism.
